Drugs

April, 2015

“What will the pain medications be like?” This has been a particularly interesting part of the journey as I am allergic to codeine which includes the standard post-surgery drugs such as hydromorphone, oxycodone, and tramadol. I tried Diladid prior to surgery and not only did it not change my pain but it caused me to stay awake for most of the night. So, I’ve opted for Morphine.  My best friend of almost 40 years shared her concerns with me. She knows my family history of addiction, and she works in the medical/hospice industry so knows of the tragedy our country is facing with narcotic addiction. I have also read some articles that suggest that addiction to pain medications may not just be the medication itself – if it were, most everyone who had ever had a surgery would be an addict. I suspect there are many factors involved, and I have way too much to do post-surgery to lay around stoned on meds. 🙂
