Back, Neck & Spine Care

Back and neck pain are the most common types of pain because of how much we sit and how we stand and move. There are multiple interventions for the spine (which includes the neck) and the rest of the body that can bring you pain relief and help your body to heal. So once we get your pain under control, we help you identify the cause of the pain, teach you how to move without pain and then coach you about how to avoid triggering pain in the future.

One of our primary goals at Healing Bridge Physical Therapy is to provide education for your recovery process and pain management. Each appointment is viewed as an opportunity to reinforce and build your foundation of healing, wellness and self-care.

Understanding the body’s anatomy is the first step in understanding how you hurt your back and how you can avoid future injury. We’ll show you how to safely perform everyday tasks, helping to prevent re-injury. You’ll also learn about neutral posture and low back stabilization. We’ll review your back exercises, checking for gentle mobility and strengthening. Then we’ll cover pacing, pain management and relaxation techniques.

Our back, neck and spine care treatment methods include:

  • Evaluation: Our specific physical therapy evaluation will allow us to pinpoint the deficits that are contributing to your issues.  It gives us our starting point and a reference to assess progress.
  • Manual Therapy, including joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization and massage
  • The McKenzie Method, a comprehensive approach to the spine including pain reduction and injury prevention
  • Exercise/stabilization to recover and then live your life without re-injury
  • Aquatics for decompression and a progression into exercise that might not initially be tolerated on land
  • Relaxation techniques

In the meantime, remember The Healing Bridge Physical Therapy ” Back Basic 7″:

  • Use a wide base of support when bending and lifting – keep your feet shoulder-width (or 16 to 24 inches) apart.
  • Have good postural alignment. Keep your head aligned with your shoulders (i.e. your ears directly above your shoulders) when bending forward. Bend from your hips and knees rather than through your back.
  • Unlock your knees. Keep them soft while standing or sitting with your legs stretched out in front of you.
  • Use effective abdominal bracing – tighten your tummy a little to use your natural corset when performing tasks.
  • Face the activity to avoid twisting.
  • Stay close to the task or keep the object close to you. (This way the “load” is taken over your center instead of through your back.)
  • Move slowly. Don’t twist or jerk, and never use momentum to perform a lift.
